Celebrating National Children’s Dental Health Month
Here at Health Centered Dentistry we are very excited to do our part to raise awareness about the importance of good dental health for the smallest in our community. The overall health of our children and quality of life is linked to the level of wellness within their mouth. From birth, the environment within their mouth contributes to their development as the mouth is the gateway to the body.
Dental Care by Age
0-2 years old: It may seem weird to think about dental care when your littlest ones have no teeth, but good home care starts with the baby’s gums! Use a soft, damp rag to rub the baby’s gums a couple times a day. This action not only creates a clean mouth, but it also helps the baby become accustomed to cleaning their mouth. Once teeth begin to appear, there are a variety of baby toothbrush options that will help them become comfortable with brushing. The most important part is that the brush is EXTRA soft. Anything harder than that can inadvertently damage their developing teeth.
3-8 years old: As soon as teeth appear, the good habits of brushing and flossing should be included in their daily routine. Dr. Clint Henrie and Dr. Kent Marchant recommend brushing with a soft toothbrush and a pea-sized amount of fluoride-free toothpaste for two minutes in the morning and at night; and floss at least once with regular floss or with a hand-held flosser.
As the child grows older and their skills begin to develop, they become more confident in themselves and will want to brush their teeth on their own. This is great and we encourage their independence! We also strongly recommend their parents or guardians assist them with brushing their teeth at least once a day until the child is 6-7 years old. Around this age, the child’s dexterity skills have advanced enough that they can reach all the surfaces of their teeth.
