At Home Self-Care Instructions For Kids
Keeping your child’s smile healthy starts with a strong at-home routine. Here’s how to care for young teeth:
Brushing
- Help your child brush twice a day — in the morning and before bed.
- Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and toothpaste.
- Ages 0–3: Use a rice-sized amount of toothpaste.
- Ages 3–6+: Use a pea-sized amount.
- Brush all sides of each tooth and along the gumline.
- Brush for 2 full minutes. Try using a timer or a fun song to make it easier!
Flossing
- Begin flossing once a day as soon as two teeth are touching.
- Use child-friendly flossers or soft picks.
- Gently guide the floss between teeth and under the gumline.
- Parents should assist until children develop good dexterity (around age 8–10).
Tips for Success
- Supervise brushing and flossing until your child can do it thoroughly.
- Encourage rinsing with water after meals if brushing isn’t possible.
- Avoid sugary snacks and drinks, especially between meals.
