At Home Self-Care Instructions For Adults
Maintaining a consistent and thorough oral hygiene routine at home is essential for healthy teeth and gums. Follow these instructions daily for optimal oral health:
Brushing
- Brush twice daily for at least 2 minutes each time.
- Use a soft-bristled toothbrush or an electric toothbrush for more effective plaque removal.
- Hold the brush at a 45-degree angle toward the gumline.
- Use gentle, circular motions — avoid harsh scrubbing.
- Brush all surfaces: outer, inner, and chewing surfaces of each tooth, and gently brush your tongue.
Recommended:
- Baking soda slurry
- Replace your toothbrush or brush head every 3–4 months or sooner if bristles are frayed.
Flossing
- Floss once daily, ideally before bedtime.
- Use 18–24 inches of dental floss, winding most around your middle fingers, leaving 1–2 inches to work with.
- Gently slide the floss between your teeth using a sawing motion.
- Curve the floss into a “C” shape against each tooth and slide it under the gumline.
- Use a clean section of floss for each tooth.
Alternatives: Floss picks or soft picks can be helpful if manual dexterity is limited.
Water-Pik (Oral Irrigator)
- Use once daily, especially if you have braces, implants, bridges, or periodontal concerns.
- Fill the reservoir with lukewarm water (you may add Oxyfresh rinse if directed).
- Set to a low or medium pressure setting when starting.
- Aim the tip at a 90-degree angle to the gumline, and move tooth by tooth along both the upper and lower gumlines. Do the cheek side and tongue side.
- Allow water to flow freely from your mouth into the sink — don’t try to swallow.
Tip: Use your water flosser before brushing to remove debris and maximize effectiveness.
General Tips
- Stay consistent with your routine — prevention is key to avoiding cavities and gum disease.
- Schedule professional cleanings and checkups every 6 months, or as recommended.
- Let us know if you experience bleeding, pain, or sensitivity.
