What are Amalgam Fillings?
Amalgam fillings have been placed by dentists in the USA since 1830. A dental amalgam (silver) filling is an alloy that includes mercury, silver, tin and copper. Mercury is used to bind the alloy together into filling material. Even at that time, the side effects of using mercury in fillings was apparent.
Composite Tooth Fillings
At Health Centered Dentistry, we do not place amalgam fillings due to mercury content. We use bio-compatible material for fillings which includes resin (white) composite material. When the time comes for your old amalgam filling to be removed, we want to be the ones to help you have it removed safely.
Amalgam is treated as a bio-hazard when it is shipped to dental offices and when it is removed from the mouth. We want to make sure you are protected from mercury exposure when the amalgam fillings are removed. According to the International Academy of Oral Medicine & Toxicology (IAOMT):
“The process of drilling out amalgam fillings liberates quantities of mercury vapor and fine particulates that can be inhaled and absorbed through the lungs, and this is potentially harmful to patients, dentists, and dental workers.”

Amalgam Dental Filling Treatment
If the time has come to remove your amalgam fillings, we have specific protocols that will help protect you during treatment. These include:
High-vacuum suction including Clean Up® device
Adequate filtration in each operatory
High-volume oral aerosol vacuum
Protective gowns for patients and dental team
Respiratory grade mask for dental team
Oxygen delivered via nasal mask for the patient
IV Vitamin C
We also provide supplements prior to treatment which include charcoal, glutathione, and selenium. These supplements help to chelate with mercury particles and expulse them from the body.
